This access statement is aimed at helping you to know what to expect if attending a service or visiting the church. We do have limited facilities for disabled people.

Although St James' Church does not have a car park and therefore no designated parking space for disabled people by the church gate, cars can stop by this gate for passengers to alight and their wheelchairs be unloaded.  A wheelchair for visitors is kept inside the church. If you would like to use this please ask a church watcher, church warden or sidesperson or any member of the church who will be happy to assist you.

There is a gentle slope from the road side, through the gate and up The Avenue between the lime trees that leads to the South Porch, which is the main entrance of the church.  There is a step into the church porch.  Just inside the porch are two lightweight ramps that maybe used.  Do ask if you need assistance with these.  There is also a step into the church from the porch.  Again the ramps can be used.  Inside the church there are wide aisles for easy use for wheelchair users.

The church is fitted with an induction-loop system for the benefit of hearing-aid users. The public address system is used at all services. Large print service booklets, are available.  A sidesperson will  be able to provide you with one of these.

At various times during a service the Vicar may invite the congregation to stand: you are most welcome to remain seated if this is more comfortable for you.

It is our practice for the bread and wine of the Holy Communion to be taken to anyone who might find difficulty in accessing or climbing the chancel steps.  Please inform a member of the church if you would find this of benefit.

Gluten free communion wafers are available, if requested before the service starts.

Coffee, juice and biscuits are served in the welcoming area following the 9.30am Sunday morning service and before the 11.00am service.  You will be most welcome to join us to take the opportunity to meet other members of the congregation. Again, if required, members of the church will be pleased to assist in obtaining refreshments for you.

A single unisex toilet is available on request. Please speak to a member of the church.  However, unfortunately this is not suitable for wheelchair access.

We aim to be inclusive and to make Worship accessible for all. If you have special needs which we have not considered above, please do ask us, either at church or by e-mail
